Do You Know About The “New” Four Food Groups?

In my post yesterday addressing the statements of Angelina Jolie, I briefly introduced the concept of the new Four Food Groups.  I realized this concept may be totally new to many of you, so I wanted to devote today’s post to providing much more detail on this.

First, I’ll add that when it was first introduced, the public didn’t quite know how to take it.  In fact, in many people’s minds, they chose to not even recognize it.  Yet, there was enough attention to this concept that the media was involved.  Even the great host of the Tonight Show, Johnny Carson, got into the game. He made a joke about the new four food groups being:  Cheeseburgers, Fries, Ketchup, and Coke!  Ha … what a great sense of humor!  (Although, sadly, that is a typical meal of far too many Americans…).

The Time Had Come ….

The organization who created and presented the new four food groups deserves an introduction.  The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine was founded by Neil Barnard MD in 1985.  He is a physician who is committed to improving the world’s health through optimal vegan nutrition.  He has made a remarkable contribution to the progress of nutritional awareness in our country.

The OLD Food Groups Needed To Be Changed

Indeed.  The old food groups of Meat/Fish, Dairy, Grains, and Fruits/Vegetables needed an upgrade.  There is a tremendous amount of history about how these original four food groups were created and where the tremendous financial backing came from to insure it was disseminated widely through all the schools. (Hint:  the Grain and Dairy industry ….).   However, in the new food groups, the Meat/Fish category and the Dairy category were dropped.  Yes.  Eliminated.

The removal of the Meat/Fish and Dairy food groups was based entirely on science.  It has been proven beyond any doubt that a diet free from animal-based products is far more healthy than one which included these products.  If you are interested in exploring further and jumping into the nitty gritty details, I recommend you to obtain a copy of Dr. Colin Campbell’s book, The China Study.  This book is universally respected to be the most comprehensive study of nutrition ever conducted.  If you read this book and digest the information, I would be quite surprised if you ate meat again … Truly, it is that compelling!

What Is The Big Difference In The New Food Group Classification?

Well, besides the fact that meat/fish and dairy are removed, the biggest health outcome is that in this new plan there is no cholesterol whatsoever.  That’s right.  Cholesterol is only found in animal products, so if you remove those, you are removing all sources of dietary cholesterol.  Just imagine what good that can do for you!

Good For Your Heart

Just to be perfectly clear, we do need cholesterol for healthy living.  Cholesterol is naturally made in our body, according to our body’s needs.  It is when we introduce dietary cholesterol into the mix that things seem to get out of whack.  The need for physicians to closely follow your cholesterol is because cholesterol has been closely associated with heart disease.  However, if you remove your sources of dietary cholesterol, all of a sudden your body is freed to create the exact amount of cholesterol it needs for optimal functioning.  No more and no less.  That is powerful!

It Becomes Easier To Achieve Your Ideal Weight

Without needing to restrict calories or limit portion sizes, you can eat all you want within the new four food groups and you will still lose weight.  Following the new four food groups is the ideal way to achieve your optimal weight.  This is not my personal opinion speaking here — this is factual, based upon tremendous amounts of research and live studies to prove this point over and over.

Just imagine what our country would be like if people really embraced this new food group plan?  Our rapidly escalating obesity rates would cease to grow.  In due time, the rates would fall.  How awesome that would be!

Calcium Balance Is Improved

This may seem counter-intuitive to the uninitiated.  For, haven’t we all learned in school that milk and dairy products are great sources of calcium?  Well … let me address that myth now.

There is tremendous research which proves that a diet high in protein will significantly increase the amount of calcium that is excreted in the body.  So, although there is calcium in dairy products, the loss of calcium due to the high protein in the diet is far, far greater than the calcium absorbed in the dairy.  Numerous experiments have proven this.  In fact, knowing that the US eats a lot of protein – and therefore will lose a tremendous amount of calcium – the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) is set very  high for calcium.  The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends a much lower protein intake, and subsequently a lower calcium intake for optimal health.

You see, without an overdose of protein, calcium has a much better chance to stay in the bones where it provides so much benefit.

The Pathway Has Been Made Clear

So, there you have it.  The New Four Food Groups is an excellent blueprint to follow for optimal health.  Even though this was introduced in 1991, there are still many people who have not yet learned about this powerful tool.  Please pass this article along to them, so that the word of hope can spread.  Tweet it even!

Also, if you missed my message yesterday, I encouraged you to check out one of my videos on my YouTube channel that deals specifically with the New Four Food Groups.  Please check it out – and subscribe to my channel too.  Here’s the link:
